London

Altab Ali Park in East London (Whitechapel area), We shot this for a client the other day, the brief wanted a shot of the gates looking into the park but there is always something iconic with london landmarks if you get a red bus or a black cab in the shot so I shot this one from inside the park looking out as a red bus went past,

Very interesting gate.. is the red tape round the bottom metal..or is that temporary? Was it put up in someones memory?
Mark Varley: The red tape is part of the monument/arch, here is some information about it, it's a memorial to a local young man murdered in a racial attack. The stone pillars are the enteranceway to the old White Chapel that this part of london is named after, the chapel was destroyed by a WW2 bomb.

"On the corner of Whitechapel Road and White Church Lane. This arch made by David Peterson was put up as a memorial to Altab Ali and other victims of racial violence. Altab Ali was murdered in Adler Street in 1978 in a racial attack. The arch is partly modern and partly old, because the bases are part of the stone doorway into the "White Chapel" which stood here until it was bombed in World War 2. These bases had been listed to protect them and when the arch was made, the sculptor was only allowed to put one bolt into each base to anchor the arch. The arch follows a Bengali styling and is intended to show a merging of two cultures."
